Gutter-Con originated during the pandemic when Bren VanderZwaag, owner of Metro Gutter & Home Services in Nova Scotia, recognized a significant gap in the industry. While researching online for conferences focused specifically on gutter businesses, VanderZwaag came across numerous events for roofing companies but found nothing tailored to gutter professionals. This realization sparked his idea to create a dedicated platform for the industry, allowing business owners and contractors to come together, share insights, and grow their operations.
Determined to make this vision a reality, VanderZwaag’s first step was to reach out to New Tech Machinery (NTM), a leading name in the gutter equipment industry. After making initial contact, he traveled to Denver, Colorado, where he met with Terry McGuire, NTM’s Vice President. This meeting solidified the idea for Gutter-Con, and with the support of NTM, VanderZwaag organized the first-ever conference in Colorado. The inaugural event included a tour of the NTM plant, giving attendees a firsthand look at the cutting-edge technology and machinery that could enhance their businesses.
Reflecting on the success of the event, VanderZwaag emphasized the value Gutter-Con has brought to gutter contractors from across North America. He describes it as a unique opportunity for business owners—whether they’re just starting out or looking to improve efficiency in established operations—to connect with industry peers, learn about new products, and gain insights that can help them grow.
Since its inception, Gutter-Con has seen remarkable growth. The first conference, held in 2022, attracted just under 100 participants, primarily small business owners managing fleets of 1-3 trucks. By 2024, the event had expanded significantly, with around 300 attendees, including both smaller operators and larger companies generating over $1 million annually in revenue. The conference now serves as a vital resource for gutter professionals at all stages of their business journey, offering a blend of education, networking, and innovation in a rapidly evolving industry.
